“Paradigm Shift I–XII” Medium: Acrylic and Ink on Paper. Dimensions: 11 x 14 in. Artist: Albert Allen III (b. 1961, San Francisco, California)
In his evocative new series, Paradigm Shift I–XII, Albert Allen III invites viewers into a surreal continuum where time warps, structure bends, and perception renews itself. Executed in his hallmark style, what Allen calls a “Symphony of Colorful Movements”, this series of acrylic and ink works forgoes vibrant hues in favor of a stark, powerful interplay of black and white. The monochromatic palette amplifies the kinetic visual language of the series, revealing a masterful
tension between abstraction and symbolic structure. Each of the twelve 11 x 14 inch compositions features a central clock face whose hands move
counter-clockwise, a potent metaphor that challenges our culturally programmed understanding of time and linear progression.
The unconventional clock, surrounded by swirling, amoebic forms and sharply drawn voids, creates a rhythmic dance across the surface. Time here is not measured, but felt. The forms suggest both anthropomorphic and cosmic references, eye like orbs peer through spattered voids, while geometric silhouettes hint at architecture and anatomy. They hover and collide in gravitational choreography, echoing Kandinsky’s spiritual abstraction, Miró’s biomorphic surrealism, and the compositional tension of Jean Arp. Yet Allen’s signature lies in how he composes chaos into harmony. This is abstraction with intention, motion with message. With roots in the rich cultural tapestry of San Francisco and a career that has continually evolved, Albert Allen III has long explored the philosophical and metaphysical undercurrents of modern existence. Paradigm Shift may be his most pointed exploration yet, one that calls the
viewer to reevaluate assumptions about progress, time, and presence in the digital age.
